Larvae of the fruit fly,Drosophila melanogaster(Meigen), were exposed to either of two sublethal doses of the insect growth regulator methoprene. The longevity and fertility of adults that eclosed were determined. Methoprene-treated females initiated vitellogenic oocyte development sooner but laid fewer eggs over a 5-d period than untreated females. However, the fertility of oviposited eggs was unchanged by methoprene treatment. A higher percentage of methoprene-treated males compared with untreated were infertile, due largely (but not entirely) to incomplete rotation of the external genitalia. Adult life spans of treated females were shorter than those of control females. Results indicate that sublethal doses of methoprene can significantly affect the fitness of a dipteran insect and must be considered when estimating the potential for evolution of resistance to this insecticide.
