After tetanic afferent stimulation of a monosynaptic reflex pathway transmission through that pathway of isolated reflex volleys is enhanced for some minutes. Post-tetanic potentiation occurs in both extensor and flexor monosynaptic reflex arcs, but little post-tetanic change attends transmission through plurisynaptic reflex arcs. Facilitator and inhibitor actions of monosynaptic reflex afferent fibers, as well as the transmitter action, are potentiated following tetanization. A var. of tests shows that the potentiating influence of a tetanus is limited to subsequent action on the part of the tetanized fibers themselves. Direct measurement of afferent volleys shows them to be increased, apparently the result of post-tetanic hyperpolari-zation (positive after-potential). The augmented impulses provide a more intense synaptic action. Post-tetanic potentiation and after-discharge are unrelated phenomena.
