Cadmium is a classic example of a ubiquitous trace element with an increasing exposure to industrial and general populations. The metal was discovered in 1817 by Strohmeyer in Germany. Production began in 1829 in Upper Silesia and in the United States in 1907. American production has been steadily accelerating since, and it is estimated that United States consumption, 12.6 million pounds in 1972, will increase two-to threefold by the year 2000. l* There is an estimated concomitant occupational exposure of 100,000 workers in the United States exposed to cadmium, its compounds, and products according to the 1974 National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health Priority
