The elaboration of social structure is the response of a system to the stresses occasioned within it by the multiplication of its units. As human numbers increase, they stretch the capacity of the existing structure to accommodate them, and when this pressure exceeds the "elastic limits" of the system, it responds by giving rise to new practices and insititutions.
