Vitamin supplements are widely given to hospitalized patients because of an in-adequate dietary intake, and the presumption that the catabolic effects of trauma or disease may increase vitamin requirements.‘This paper presents observations on the occurrence and significance of vitamin deficiency in a randomly selected municipal hospital population. The development of specific and sensitive 2 and protozoologic3 methods for mea-suring vitamins in biological fluids and tissues permitted the detection of vitamin imbalance.
