The term" Interval Analysis" denotes a general and distinctive approach to numerical computation, having wide-ranging areas of application. As such it is a remarkable intrusion into what has seemed to be a well-explored field.(The word" interval" may suggest time intervals, but this is misleading. Analysis of statistics of inter-event time intervals could also be interesting, but is not the topic.) The basis of the method appeared first in a doctoral thesis in 1962, but did not receive widespread attention until twenty years later. The method depends on the partitioning of the multidimensional space of interest to produce areas that are rectangles in 2D space, or boxes in 3D, etc. The term" interval" is only fully descriptive in the single-dimensional case. The partitioning of the space is not exhaustive, as with systematic gridding, and the" intervals" can vary in size, in a pattern chosen to suit the problem.
