A clear zone, which is the cytoplasmic contribution to the mitotic spindle, forms around the nucleus, appearing in early prophase and rapidly enlarging in late prophase. In Haemanthus katharinae the slow growth of the zone may last for over 4 hours, while subsequent, more rapid development occupies a further 30 min. to 2 hours. During all this time the decrease in volume of the nucleus is but slight. The clear zone has no definite structure and, unlike the fully formed mitotic spindle, is semi-liquid and may flow out from the cell. The quantity of the substance which may migrate from the nucleus into the clear zone is very small in relation to the growth of the clear zone and its quantitative influence may be neglected.
