This chapter begins with a review of the existing phonetic theories of sound change and surveying proposed linkages between phonetic processes and sound changes. It explores the limits of existing phonetic theories, highlighting current efforts to fill in the areas of silence in existing phonetic theories and pointing out non‐phonetic factors that might influence phonetically‐based sound changes. Phonetic theories of sound change have primarily focused on identifying variations in speech that provide important insights into the origins of widely attested, cross‐linguistic sound changes. The inception of phonologization is often conceptualized as a consequence of listeners mistaking accidental effects of the speakers’ production system, the listeners’ own perceptual system, or ambient distortion of the acoustic stream as being representative of the speaker's internal computation. Many aspects of speech production are contingent on the aerodynamic condition of the vocal tract.
