All problems in CT are ill-posed, even if to a very different degree. Therefore, any serious mathematical treatment of CT requires some fundamental notions from the theory of ill-posed problems. We give in Section IV.1 a short introduction into this field. In Section IV.2 we study the accuracy we can expect for CT problems, given the accuracy of the data and the number of projections. In Section IV.3 we derive the singular value decomposition of the Radon transform. The subject of ill-posedness is taken up again in Chapter VI on incomplete data problems.
