Pathogenic X. juglandis isolates were consistently recovered from symptomless walnut buds, twigs, leaves, catkins and nuts. The bacteria were also isolated from plant refuse, mummy nuts and blighted branches. Similarly, the presence of X. juglandis was demonstrated on symptomless weeds. The epiphytic populations of X. juglandis together with populations associated with blighted and cankered branches from previous seasons apparently are potential sources of inoculum.
