Cis, trans, and metal effects are the specific" inorganic" substituent effects that may be observed in the transition metal porphyrins and taken from their ground-state, thermodynamic, or kinetic properties. A knowledge of these effects may help to sort out the essential electronic parameters that govern the specific action of the heine proteins in biologic oxygen transport and redox processes r Pronounced effects are found in metalloporphyrins of the spectral" hypso" or" hyper" type (eg, with metals in the low spin d 6 or high-spin d 5 configurations). A simple set of electronic transmission schemes helps to achieve an intuitive understanding of the operation of the cis, trans and metal effects taken from a large variety of different sources. The schemes work rather nicely with the hypso type, but only satisfactorily with the hyper type in the d 1, d 2, and high-spin d 4 or d 5 cases. The important hemichromes (low-spin d 5 systems," mixed hypso/hyper" type) are not yet sufficiently understood.
