Comments on the paper by JB Wagman and DB Miller (see record 2003-00243-002) in which Wagman and Miller made a case for a number of connections between the theories of ecological psychology as formulated by EJ and JJ Gibson (eg, EJ Gibson, 1984; EJ Gibson and Pick, 2000; JJ Gibson, 1950, 1966, 1979) and the transactional approach proposed by DS Lehrman. Wagman and Miller point out that both Gibson and Lehrman placed the organism-environment system at the center of inquiry. The current author suggests that Wagman and Miller fail to recognize the number and breadth of studies conducted by students and colleagues of JJ and EJ Gibson who study development, and to use such findings to illustrate how research undertaken with an eye to functionalism and ecological psychology can lead to a greater understanding of behavior. Wagman and Miller seem to have limited their use of" development scientist" to those who take a transactional approach in biology, but the field of developmental science is intradisciplinary. The current author hopes to make the contributions of developmental scientists to both the study of behavior and to the efficacy of ecological and transactional approaches more explicit.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
