In many species, unfertilized eggs or 1-cell embryos are already polarized such that the first cell division after fertilization results in blastomeres with inherently different developmental potential. In contrast, early mammalian embryos have blastomeres that are generally considered to be symmetrical and totipotent. We recently observed in mouse embryos that the sperm tail, which is enveloped and incorporated by the egg at fertilization, is not immediately degraded, but instead becomes preferentially associated with only one of the two blastomeres after the first cleavage division. In this image, the sperm tail fibrous sheath is observed immediately after fertilization (top embryo), and remains associated with the male pronucleus in the 1-cell embryo (female pronucleus not in plane of image). In the 2-cell embryos, the sperm tail fibrous sheath is associated with the nucleus of one blastomere. This finding indicates that one blastomere inherits a disproportionate amount of sperm tail components, and that the blastomeres of a 2-cell mouse embryo are not equivalent. Whether or not these sperm components impact blastomere development is unknown.
