The cell surface phenotypes of the peripheral lymphocytes were determined using monoclonal antibodies in a patient with acute cytomegalovirus infection and in one with acute toxoplasmosis. In both patients high numbers of OKT3+ and OKT8+ T cells were found, compared with levels in 15 controls; absolute numbers of OKT4+ cells were within the normal range. Cells expressing Ia antigen were increased. Activation and proliferation of OKT8+ T lymphocytes could be a general feature in infections with intracellular agents and the suppressive activity of these cells may limit the proliferation of parasitized cells.
