There was a turning point in the long history of therapeutic heat(l) in 1965 when a group of research workers at Rome University published the first report of a systematic study on the biological and clinical aspects of heating, providing the rationale for a new scientific and clinical field: hyperthermia (2). The heating methods then available were those of rehabilitation medicine, with the artificially produced heat sources such as short-waves, microwaves, and ultrasound, which were used in an empirical way. Since then a continuing effort has been pursued in the search for technical means of safe and adequate heat delivery to the tumoral masses, and considerable improvements have been made in heating technology.
