A monodisperse latex which is ordinarily milky white in appearance exhibits beautiful iridescent colors under certain conditions. This iridescence is due to the Bragg reflection of visible light by the orderly arrays of the spherical particles of the latex (1). The authors showed that the transition from the milky white state (without order) to the iridescent state (with the ordered structure) is not explained by the DLVO theory but by a statistical theory about the transition between fluid and solid states (the Kirkwood-Alder transition)(2). This transition would be essentially the same as tactoid formation in a dispersion of needle-like particles, that is, the cause of this transition is of entropic nature (3). The authors have been studying this transition by microscopic observation (4) and in the course of this study they frequently observed segregation phenomena accompanying this transition; outsized particles or aggregates (hereafter these are referred to as" impurity") that happened to be contained in the system were pushed out of the ordered region.
