This chapter examines networks among Scots in Asia over time and in comparative context, focusing on the role of ethnic associations in facilitating and sustaining expatriate networks in what has always been a highly transient environment. By examining the development of Scottish ethnic societies, their activities and membership, the chapter sheds light on how ethnic associations continue to provide a potent support mechanism that roots expat life both locally and transnationally, while also being effective tools for social capital generation. The chapter draws on examples from other ethnic groups—English and Germans—to establish to what extent developments in the Scottish community were distinctive.
