INTRODUCTION Prostate cancer is a signif icant health care problem in the United States due to its high incidence and mortality, the costs associated with its detection and treatment, and the fact that no consensus exists on what constitutes the best form of treatment for any stage of this disease. Excluding superficial skin cancers, prostate cancer is the most common malignancy aff l ict ing American men.
