In mammalian species in which females mate with a number of males during the fer tile period of the ovarian cycle, sexual selec tion, via sperm competition, has led to the evolution of larger testes (relative to body weight) and to a greater proportion of motile spermatozoa in the ejaculate [1-4], Thus, among the primates, species with multimale mating systems (eg Pan troglodytes) or dis persed, non-gregarious mating systems (eg Galago spp.) have larger testes relative to body weight than species which are monoga mous (eg Hylobates spp.) or which form polygynous one-male units (eg Gorilla). In creased relative testis size is due primarily to the greater volume of seminiferous tubules required to produce larger numbers of sper matozoa [5]. On theoretical grounds, Parker
