Despite recent positive developments on the labor market, there is still a group of long term unemployed having ongoing difficulties to succeed in labor market integration. This group is often subject of strongly devaluing, morally charged attributions. This paper, dedicated to the perspective of the long term unemployed, examines the specific perceptions these persons have about these practices of attribution, how they interpret their status, and how they report on the experiences of stigmatization. The central theoretical reference for this study is Goffman’s concept of stigma. After an elaboration of some unique elements of the concept and discussing these elements with regard to nature and intensity of the stigma of unemployment, some of Goffman’s ideas will be applied to empirical material. For this purpose, 12 interviews with long-term unemployed and additional qualitative secondary analyses of existing interviews were conducted. The study shows that Goffman’s reflections offer suitable ways to analyse to what extent those affected by long-term unemployment avoid their own vulnerabilities and how they cope with disapproval from others. It also reveals that in many cases those affected by unemployment report of rather painful experiences with stigmatization. They broadly narrate of anticipated disapproval or experienced negative attributions with respect to their status.
