This paper presents the design approach and mechanical behavior of a permanent magnet synchronous machine for automotive applications incorporating a rotor with circumferential segmentation. Finding an alternative to shrink force fitting of rotor lamination stacks and improving material utilization are the main objectives. In addition to the mechanical architecture, the focus is on the magnetic design, i.e. implementing wide field weakening capabilities by using reluctance torque and minimizing magnet volume. The mechanical performance of the rotor structure was verified on several prototypes concerning torque overloading, high speed operation and balancing tests. This work is part of a joint research project of Thyssenkrupp Presta Camshafts GmbH and Chemnitz University of Technology.
