Acute ischemic stroke causes≈ 691 000 hospitalizations per year. 9 In-hospital mortality is≈ 7%. 10 Stroke is the fourth-leading cause of death. 9 Therefore, stroke is one of the leading public health problems in the United States. Improved quality of care can reduce the health burden of stroke. Although age-standardized stroke mortality is falling, the overall burden of stroke is expected to increase because of the aging of the population. 9 Our hope is that the acute ischemic stroke performance measures provided here will facilitate improved quality of care, leading to better outcomes from stroke.
