The authors have developed a new system capable of detecting electrographic potential through underwear worn by an infant lying in a supine position from its dorsal surface, simply by placing the electrodes under the underwear. The system is based on capacitive coupling involving the electrode, the underwear, and the skin, and also on an impedance matching circuit to mediate high output impedance of the coupling with low input impedance required by subsequent circuitry. Simultaneous measurements with a conventional device were conducted in 6 infants aged 43 to 136 days, and revealed that periodic waveforms synchronized with the reference ECG could be obtained even when underwear was worn by the infant so far as he/she yielded sufficient pressure at the skin-to-electrode coupling and slept during the measurement.
