Steller sea lions (SSLs), Eumetopias jubatus, are widely distributed throughout the North Pacific rim from California, USA to Hokkaido Island, Japan (Allen 1880, Loughlin et al. 1992). SSLs occurring around the coast of Hokkaido Island belong to the Asian stock, which comprises populations in the Kuril Islands, the Sea of Okhotsk, and Kamchatka Peninsula (Baker et al. 2005). The Asian stock decreased rapidly from approximately 25,000 in the 1960s to 13,000 in the 1990s. It has been rebounding slightly since then (Burkanov and Loughlin 2005). The latest population estimate of the stock was approximately 17,000 based on direct counts at major rookeries and haul-out sites conducted during the summer of 2004–2005 (Burkanov and Loughlin 2005).
