A comprehensive study based on more than 8000 individuals, with a review of taxonomic history, a key to the Nearctic families of the super-family Hemerobioidea, keys to Nearctic genera and spp., descriptions, synonymy, distr. data, and figures. In Hemerobiidae, 12 spp. of Hemerobius ( = Schneiderobius Kruger, Hagenobius Kruger, and Reuterobius Kruger), including H. ovalis*, Calif. and other w. coast regions; H. nigrans*, Brit. Columbia, Calif., Wyo., and Colo.; and H. costalis*, Maine, Canada, and Alaska; 9 of Kimminsia, including K. involuta*, Alberta; and K. fumata*, Colo.; 1 of Wesmaelius; 15 of Sympherobius, including S.gracilis*, N. Car.; 5. limbus*, Texas; S. similis*, Ariz.; S. distinctus*, Colo.; and S. killingtoni*, w. U. S.; 4 of Megalomus, including M. angulatus*, N. Y.; 2 of Boriomyia; 5 of Micromus; and 1 of Psectra are treated. 8 genera erected by Kruger are considered invalid: the 3 mentioned above, and Pleomegalomus, Eurobius, Stenomicromus, Pseudomicromus, and Paramicromus, which were erected on the basis of variable characteristics. In Sisyridae, 1 sp. of Sisyra and 1 of Climacia; in Berothidae, 10 spp. of Lomamyia, including L. banksi*, from east coast to Ariz.; L. tenuis*, N. Mex.; L. latipennis*, Calif. and Ariz.; L. fulvia*, Calif.; and L. squamosa*, Tex.; in Polystoechotidae, 1 sp. of Polystoechotes and PLATY-STOECHOTES with type P. lineatus*, Calif.; and in Dilaridae, 2 spp. of Nallachius are treated. There is a bibliography of about 100 titles.
