Four polypeptides cooperate to find the capped 5′-terminus of eukaryotic mRNA, begin the melting out of 5′-terminal secondary structure at the expense of ATP, and transfer the mRNA to the 40S ribosomal subunit. Regulation of translation could potentially occur at either the cap-recognition or unwinding steps and may be governed by phosphorylation of certain of these polypeptides and mRNA secondary structure.
