The way in which technical advances are brought into being has changed as rapidly as technology itself in the 20th century. In the good old days, an inventor was an inventor pure and simple; he worked on his own or with the minimum amount of assistance. There were no outside pressures from industry or governments; the engineer could indulge his own interests to his heart's content.Now, of course, this situation no longer exists; the person credited with the invention of a new device, or the discovery of a new effect, is likely to be the head of a large team, backed by vast amounts of money supplied by either industry or government grants, or both.
