A chemoreceptive sens ilium trichodeum was found on the legs of Phormia regina Meigen. It is characterized by a curved, blunt-tipped seta which has a two-toned appearance when viewed from the side. Internally the hair contains a large eccentrically located cavity and a smaller cavity in the heavier portion of the wall. Vitally stained methylene blue preparations and sectioned material have revealed that these hairs are innervated by 3 bipolar sense cells. Two go to either of the setal cavities, and the 3rd terminates in the socket. The distribution of two-toned setae on the legs correlates precisely with the distribution of tarsal sensitivity to sucrose, and local stimulation expts. in which a single hair or group of hairs were immersed in a sucrose soln. proved that these are contact chemoreceptors. A similar type of hair was found on the proboscis of Phormia as well as on the tarsi of several other species of insects, some of which are known to have tarsal chemosensitivity.
