An analytical method was developed. for bisphenol A (BPA) in canned fish and meat. A sample was extracted with 150 mt of ethyl acetate and the organic layer was washed with 150 mt of 5% NaCl solution. After defatting by n-hexane/acetonitrile partition, the extract was loaded on a 10% water-dehydrated silica gel column, washed with 100 mt of 15% acetone/ n-hexane and eluted with 50 mt of 60% acetone/n-hexane. The eluate was evaporated to dryness and dissolved in methanol. BPA was analyzed by HPLC [column, Wakosil 5C18 (4.6 mm i.d.X150 mm); mobile phase, 60% methanol; detection, 230 nm; flow rate, 0.8 mL/min].Recovery of BPA in 20 g of canned tuna steak (maguro steak) fortified with 1 mu g of BPA was 89.9+/-7.1 (n = 3). Four kinds of canned fish and three kinds of canned meat on the market were analyzed for BPA with the developed method. The ranges of BPA content were N.D.similar to 319 ng/g. The detection limit of BPA was 25 ng/g.This method was effective for BPA in canned fish and meat and does not use solvents such as chloroform and dichloromethane.
