Tritiated thymidine was injected into separate groups of fifth instar milkweed bugs on successive days throughout the fifth stadium. Hemolymph smears were made from different insects every 24 hours after the injection for the duration of the fifth stadium. The percentage of cells with tritiated thymidine incorporation, the percentage of cells in mitosis, and the percentage of mitotic figures with incorporation was determined. The high peaks of tritiated thymidine incorporation into the hemocytes occurred on 5-6 days and 9-10 days after the molt regardless of the day in the fifth stadium when the injection of thymidine was given. Variable percentages (0-15) of mitosis were seen throughout the stadium. There was no correlation of the mitotic index with the post molt age of the insect, day of injection, or peaks of tritiated thymidine incorporation.
