We report an experimental study of English and Mandarin Chinese utterance-level prosodic contours produced by native and non-native speakers, with a focus on whether second-language speakers appropriately differentiate sentences of three illocutionary types: statements, questions, and echo questions. For both languages, the data show a striking failure by second-language learners either to achieve target-like sentence-level prosody or to transfer native-language contours, with the exception of local F0 excursions in final syllables. We discuss a range of possible explanations, which can be tested in further research, for why transfer was not more extensive and why in particular it was confined to utterance-final position. A tentative conclusion is that local and global prosodic phenomena may differ fundamentally in their linguistic, processing and neural bases.
