This article reviews the literature associated with post-development theory. Considering the poor track record of the post-WWII development project, post development theory has taken a radical stance, suggesting that the concept of 'development' must be altogether rejected. A review of four distinctive journal articles serves as the foundation for understanding the position of post-development theorists, the critiques of the theory and the value of the theory as a way through the 'impasse in development'. It is ultimately argued that post-development theory offers not only a damning critique of mainstream development, but also a potentially valuable framework for attaining development that is defined, initiated and controlled by those searching for a better life.
