Translation is regulated predominantly at the initiation level, mediated by the eukaryotic initiation factor-4 and -2 complexes (eIF-4 and eIF-2).1, 2The eIF-4 complex is essential for recruiting mRNA to a ribosome. The two most important components of this complex are the eIF-4E and eIF-4G. Phosphorylation of eIF-4E and eIF-4G increases protein synthesis as well as selective translation of specific messages.2
