The specialty that integrates nursing science with multiple information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice. NI supports nurses, consumers, patients, the interprofessional healthcare team, and other stakeholders in their decision-making in all roles and settings to achieve desired outcomes. This support is accomplished through the use of information structures, information processes, and information technology. 1 (pp1-2)The document identifies “multiple information and analytical sciences” including, but not limited to, computer science, cognitive science, the science of terminologies and taxonomies (including naming and coding conventions), information management, library science, heuristics, archival science, and mathematics. Much has changed in the digital age since the 2008 edition of the ANA scope and standards, requiring further development of roles previously identified in the standards and creation of new roles in NI to address the changing needs. As a nursing specialty, NI is moving from a more generalist role largely focused on implementation of electronic health records, bar code medication administration, and smart pumps to greater specialization in key areas, some of which are described next.
