Restoration of masticatory function is one of the important objectives of prosthodontic treatment for improvement of quality of life (QOL) and extension of healthy life. Brain functions such as learning and memory have been shown to be reduced by loss of occlusal support associated with tooth extraction and masticatory dysfunction [1]. A variety of factors such as neurotransmission from the periodontal ligament and muscle spindle and mechanical stimulation by tooth contact are thought to influence the relationship between occlusion and brain function [1]. However, this relationship has not yet been fully elucidated. In the evening session of the 124th Meeting of the Japan Prosthodontic Society, three lecturers made presentations about the relevance and future challenges of research on occlusion and brain function, and a fruitful discussion ensued. The following is an outline of the presentations and the discussion:
