Many U.S. populations, especially the disadvantaged, the elderly, and English language learners, do not possess sufficient health literacy to effectively use the Internet's health information content in text format. Easy-to-understand, engaging audiovisual resources could greatly increase user access to health information. Unfortunately, there are limited audiovisual resources for specific health topics. This article provides a step-by-step guide for producing low-cost health information animations and describes its application to creating environmental health education materials for a National Library of Medicine website for middle school students. Steps include background research, storyboarding, animating, voice narration/editing, and evaluation.
