Abstract Activation of secondary slip systems, {110} 〈1·0〉 and {111} 〈1·0〉, have been studied in Y2O3-stabilized ZrO2 at 1400°C by deforming crystals along orientations (〈001〉, 〈115〉, 〈113〉, and 〈029〉), for which the Schmid factors for the primary ({001} 〈110〉) system are low. The critical resolved shear stresses for {110} and {111} slip were nearly identical and about ⅓ higher than for {001} slip.
