The introduction of the endoscope for inspection of body cavities has improved the accuracy of clinical diagnosis. The endoscope provides a magnified image of internal surface topography. However, the magnification changes as the distance between the scope and object is varied. Changes in magnification make it impossible to measure surface distances for staging of lesions or determination of the displacement of structures. In some instances, it has been possible to position a ruler in the focal plane to provide a reference scale for measurement through an endoscope. In other instances, the scope-to-object distance has been measured because the magnification factor is determined by focal length. 1, 2 The distance can be measured by projection of a ruler beyond the end of the scope to the object, which then provides an index for calibration of a reticule on the endoscope eyepiece. The reticule can then be used to measure profiles in the field of view. Another method described by Nasri et al. 3 involves videoimage analysis of the vocal fold. With this technique, a videocamera is moved a known distance parallel to the vocal fold, and the extent of translation of a videoimage is noted in pixels to provide an index of surface dimension. Unfortunately, these methods of scaling an endoscope image are not practical in most clinical applications. We have designed and constructed a new device
