Kawase et al. described a far-infrared FIR, 150–290 m source based on an optical parametric oscillator in LiNbO3 pumped by a Nd: YAG laser at P 1.064 m. 1 Practical applications stringently require fixed output direction as the FIR output wavelength (T) is tuned. Kawase et al. utilize a silicon prism attached to the nonlinear crystal as an output coupler and derive that the FIR output direction is largely independent of wavelength based on two approximations: 1 T P and 2 no dispersion in the near infrared, ie, the index of refraction of both the idler, ni and the pump radiation, np, in LiNbO3 are the same. We investigate whether these approximations are justified. Using the phasematching relation, energy conservation and Snell’s law at the various interfaces, the output angle of the FIR radiation pa yields without any approximations sin pa nT c sin arcsin ni
