Gas-phase, water-soluble components of cigarette smoke caused delayed fibrin self-assembly and prevented fibrin cross-linking by inactivation of factor XIIIa (plasma transglutaminase). These anticoagulant properties of smoke were demonstrable in plasma, suggesting they played a role in the pathophysiology of smoking.
