R. rubrum (strain SI) in growing culture shows vigorous photochemical production of molecular H in an atmosphere of He, A, or H2 with glutamate or aspartate as source of N, provided malic, fumaric, or succinic acids are present. Under similar conditions resting cells will produce H2 provided malic, fumaric, oxaloacetic, or pyruvic (but not succinic) acid is present. In an atmosphere of N2 or with ammonia as the N source no photoproduction of H2 occurs. Growth in presence of formate produces organisms which will evolve H2 in the dark with formate as substrate and in N2 atmosphere, but no photoproduction of H2 has been observed with formate substrate.
