Used high-resolution, noninvasive magnetoencephalography and painless tactile stimuli to investigate possible somatosensory reorganization in 2 men with upper limb deafferentiation. S1 had experienced traumatic avulsion of his left brachial plexus 8 yrs earlier. S2 suffered accidental amputation of his right forearm 8 cm below the elbow 11 yrs before the study. Psychophysical testing revealed 2 maps of referred sensations in both Ss, one on the face and the other on the upper arm, reflecting the fact that the hand area in the Penfield homunculus is flanked by the face and arm. Results demonstrate the capacity for massive reorganization of sensory maps in the adult human brain, with therapeutic implications for recovery from brain injury and for treatment of phantom limb pain.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
