In Europe, stream restoration often foeuses on the physical struetures of a stream. In this respect, the keywords are re-meandering and re-planting of trees and shrubs (PETERSEN et al. 1992). A natural stream is a dynamie but balaneed environment (MINSHALL 1988). Stream restoration claims to re-establish this condition (BooN 1998). But are physieal struetures the best and only parameters to be taekled? The key eeologieal parameters include hydrological, morphologieal and ehemieal variables, i.e. a number of catehment, stream and habitat parameters (VERDONSCHOT et al. 1998). The objeetive of this study is to determine the role of hydrological and morphological parameters on the maeroinvertebrate distribution in two ehemieally similar soft-bottomed lowland streams. This should identify the parameters to be addressed in stream restoration.
