We are a group of patients and caregivers who have experienced hospitalization within multiple hospital systems nationwide. We serve as advisors for the HOMERuN Hospital Medicine Reengineering Network. 1 For patients like us, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of trust in the hospital environment where patients and their caregivers must quickly develop confidence in a team of healthcare providers while physically and emotionally vulnerable.We hear a lot about the need to build trust between patients, their hospital care team, and hospital systems. For us, the call should not be about building trust, but how do you earn our trust. It is our belief that to be successful, the entire hospital care team and system must approach earning trust genuinely and humbly, as our partners. The team must demonstrate respect for and understanding of us as individuals. We believe that trust can have a direct and measurable impact on the trajectory of care, as it impacts a patient’s spirit and attitude, as well as their actions. We believe that trust can be earned and outline the following four key areas for prioritization (see Figure 1).
