Fifty years ago today, on 12th December 1930, the Society was meeting at Bart’s. There were four demonstrations: Dunhill, on hyperparathyroidism, with cases, X-rays, operation specimens and data on calcium and phosphorus levels before and after operation; Kettle, on the effect of silicon and other substances on the growth of tubercle bacilli; Woolard, with injected human thyroids to show the blood and lymphatic drainage; and Wilfred Shaw on ovarian disease and related menstrual abnormalities. There were two papers: one by Arnold Carmichael on disseminated sclerosis, and one by Horace Smirk on the effect of urea administration on chloride excretion in nephritic patients. This was the second meeting, and Smirk’s paper had been held over from the first one which occurred 2 months earlier, on 24th October at University College Hospital. At this inaugural meeting, there had been six demonstrations, mainly on vascular subjects: George Pickering on the effects of unilateral sympathectomy in Raynaud’s disease; Craib and Lewis on cold vasodilatation in the finger; Lewis on measurements of peripheral blood flow-probably by temperature recording; Grant on arteriovenous anastomoses in man and in the rabbit’s ear; Grant again, on the effect of cold on arteriovenous anastomoses; and Kenneth Harris on urticaria. There was one paper, by Hilton on the cerebral circulation in anaemia and in infections. The pattern of the Society’s business was thus fully established within these first two meetings on the lines of Constitutional Rule 2, that the ‘Society is instituted for the purpose of advancing knowledge of the causes and processes of disease, by clinical or related experimental studies in man’.
