Evaluated H. Helson's (see PA, Vol. 39: 332) adaptation-level theory as applied to time-error phenomena. 15 male and 15 female undergraduates were assigned to 3 groups. Ss experienced standard and variable levels centered on either 50, 65, or 80 db. 3 interstimulus intervals (1, 4, and 7 sec.) were employed. In accordance with the theory, a significant effect due to the prior levels was found. The different time intervals, however, produced similar downward trends for all groups, whereas Helson predicted that they should diverge in opposite directions. It is concluded that the adaptation-level theory can not account for the strictly temporal aspects of time error.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
