because there is some reason to believe that homologous genetic control may operate in the two genera. On the other hand, the pale and dark phenotypes in Arianta cannot clearly be identified with the action of any of the ground colour allelomorphs in Cepaea, so that new superscripts are used to describe them. The other loci have been g:ven new symbols, since there is no clear homology between them and any system in Cepaea. Letters pre-empted for other uses in the latter species have been avoided.
