WE are engaged in a study of the composition and stability of the complex ions which result from the interaction between metal ions and anions, particularly those of biological importance. The determinations are made by measuring the degree to which tracer levels (∼ 10−8M) of a radioactive cation are taken up by a synthetic organic cation exchanger in the presence of known concentrations of a complex ion-forming anion1–3. This ion-exchange procedure has several unique advantages1. For example, the dissociation constants of several different metal–organic acid complex ions can be measured simultaneously in the same solution, no corrections are needed for the amount of anion utilized for the formation of the complex ion, and the effect of graded changes in the solutions of such factors as ionic strength, temperature, or dielectric constant can be studied on the same systems. Cation exchange resins such as ‘Dowex 50’4(manufactured by the Dow Chemical Co., Midland, Mich.) are now used in our experiments because their capacity is independent of thepH.
