To the Editor—We agree with Gautret et al that nonclimatic drivers are critical in shaping the future of malaria throughout Africa; this is why we alluded to other drivers in our editorial. However, we also argue that the association between climate and vector-borne diseases is sufficiently significant to warrant continued scientific interest.Gautret et al commented on the increasing number of publications in recent decades describing the relationship between climate and vector-borne diseases (VBDs). This increase is consistent with a general upsurge in scientific publication output, owing to the advent of the Internet and open-access science. However, there is rarely smoke without fire; the growing interest in VBD is likely linked to a tangible problem with resultant growth in scientific evidence that climate has already favored the establishment of indigenous vectors and emergence of VBD outbreaks in new regions.
