Female Sprague-Dawley rats (225–250 g) were anesthetized by intraperitoneal administration of sodium pentobarbital (40–50 mg/kg). A 23-gauge butterfly cannula was inserted in a tail vein and flushed with sterile saline. Through a midline cervical incision, a polyethylene cannula was inserted into the trachea for assisted ventilation (Harvard small animal respirator, Millis, MA). The respiratory rate was maintained at 75 breaths per minute, with a tidal volume of 0.5 mL.Capillary leak pulmonary edema was induced in 12 supine rats by venous injection of oleic acid (0.075 mL/kg), Hydrostatic edema was induced in ten supine rats by continuous intravenous infusion of 0.9% sodium chloride (25% of body weight over 20–30 minutes), MRI was performed either 30 minutes after injection of oleic acid or immediately after the completion of saline infu-
